Week 3

Listen and Build Bridges

We feed on anger and outrage today. Our culture runs on the currency of fear. We are slow to listen and very quick to speak.

Watch Week 3 of The American Dream series and learn how you can approach this election.

Meet Special Guest
Rob Schenck

Rob Schenck has been in full-time ministry for over 40 years. He’s been a pastor, church-planter, evangelist, missionary and chaplain to top government officials on Capitol Hill. Today he directs The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Institute in Washington, DC., which forms ethically courageous leaders using the insights of this brave and brilliant Christian ethicist and martyr to the Nazis. Rob is the subject of Abigail Disney’s Emmy-award winning film, The Armor of Light, an examination of Christians and the Second Amendment. He is also author of a memoir, Costly Grace: An Evangelical Minister’s Rediscovery of Faith, Hope and Love, published by HarperCollins. Rob lives in northern Virginia with his wife of 43 years, Cheryl, a psychotherapist in private practice. They have two grown children who live nearby and are the joy of their lives.

Group Discussion

We encourage you not to go through this election alone. Connect with others, listen, and find solid ground by using our weekly discussion guides.

Bridge Building Resource

Check out this guide from The OneAmerica Movement, “How to talk to your neighbor: A guide to having conversations about important issues with people who believe, think, and vote differently than you.”

Pádraig Ó Tuama's "There is no such thing as the future"

This is a piece from the famous poet, Pádraig Ó Tuama, around the concept of peacemaking. While originally written with the relations of Britain and Ireland in mind, the piece is also timely for this moment in our American political climate and the complex web of relations in which we find ourselves. We hope this poetic piece might provide you with peace in this season.
