Today we continued our work with BTH in the morning. I continue to be impressed by how quickly our students acclimate to a new setting. They just met these children but they already know their names and have built relationships with them! We did our first enrichments (our students leading fun, learning activities) and they went off really well! John Kulaga showed them how to make paper airplanes and the entire camp was having distance competitions for who could go the furthest 🙂
The kids are very energetic but our team rallied to get the instructions across and lead them well. ParkviewMSM is crushing it so far!
The evening was the first of two times we are coming to cook at Breakthrough. Students are split into two teams on these evenings. The first team is watching a film called Akeelah and the Bee (highly recommend) and doing some deep dives in their journals afterward on the effects of racial discrimination in conjunction with their history lesson from Breakthrough on Monday. The other team is cooking, serving, and eating a meal with Breakthrough Residence! Friend of Parkview, Neil Jenkins, graciously volunteered his time to prepare the menu and teach our students how to cook. No sliced fingers and a great meal prepared!
Tomorrow will be the same programming at BTH and then we get our hands dirty cleaning, organizing, and preparing Breakthrough for ministry. We’ll keep you posted on how it goes!
